Eva and her friend Kelly planned a day trip to San Juan island and invited me to tag along.

Kelly (Eva's friend) had the crazy idea to go sea kayaking in lieu of whale watching. "Oh well," I thought, "maybe we'll see some sea otters or something." Turns out we couldn't have made a better choice.

As we paddled lazily north along the island, our guide Lindsey announced, "Hmm, might be some whales up ahead". Within minutes we approached the J Pod, and stopped dead in our tracks as 20 or 30 orcas swam and jumped all around and even underneath us.

They swam as close as 10 feet; cooperatively feeding on salmon, showing off, breaching and slapping their tails.

This was perhaps the most amazing day I've ever had on the water.
