Thank You Gmane

Filed under: Default — Tags: — adam @ 6:32 am

I like the old tradition of going around the room and saying what you’re thankful for on this day. Today I’m thankful for Gmane!

Gmane is a free service which archives public mailing lists and provides various handy ways to browse and keep up to date without having to clog up your inbox. Gmane doesn’t host mailing lists, and in not doing so upholds the important virtue of doing less and doing it well. Here are the killer features, in my humble opinion:

  • import of existing legacy archives
  • all gmane.org content is completely spiderable/crawlable by search engines

Anyone can suggest the addition of mailing lists.
Tusen Takk, Lars, and viva Norway!

  1. Hey Adam, that is totally cool. One thing I noticed is that they do not obfuscate poster’s e-mail addresses. Any chance that spammers can get in and harvest these?

  2. Yes, spammers sure could harvest email addresses on certain gmane-mirrored mailing lists. When configuring a gmane mirror, there is an option to obfuscate email addresses, and this seems like a pretty good idea. I requested obfuscation last time I used gmane to add a few lists.
