If a local instance of Firefox is running and you ssh into a remote machine (while forwarding X connections locally) a remotely invoked Firefox may simply open a new window in the local instance. Here’s a workaround (spoiler: use the -no-remote command-line flag).

Forced Remote Firefox

Possibly related: I run privoxy at home and have sshd on my dd-wrt linksys router. I ssh into my router, set up port forwarding to tunnel some port to that remote privoxy, and use Firefox’s SwitchProxy add-in to sometimes tunnel my browsing through that route. It seems that’s got to be more lightweight than X tunneling — but since that’s a topic about which I know next to nothing, I could be completely wrong :)
