Crazy Stunt Pilots

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — adam @ 5:15 am PST

I put this in the “Odd” category because it is entirely random given my usual content. If you’re seeking a diversion, check out the video linked from this post’s title. It’s from a 2002 airshow in Japan. The cameras aimed at the pilots’ faces are priceless. I’ve wondered what the heck goes on in the head of a stunt pilot, and if watching their face while they are flying is any indication, they’re absolutely crazy. Thanks to coworker Perry for the link.

Since I started work at Boeing last week, I’ve been thinking about planes a bit more than usual. Yes, it’s a great job! I’m working on cool Linux stuff, including the Electronic Flight Bag.

Cook With a Cold Stove

Filed under: Default — adam @ 9:39 pm PST

This stove uses magnetic induction instead of a hot coil to heat up a magnetic pan. How cool is that? The pan itself acts like the heating element.

Old Sea Sayings

Ever wonder where phrases like “until the bitter end” and “let the cat out of the bag” originated? They’re old sailor adages.

Save Space and Time: Hard Links and Incremental Backups

Filed under: Default — adam @ 2:40 pm PST

Incremental backups always seemed expensive and time consuming to me, then along came rsnapshot. Basically, the idea is that incremental backups use hard links whenever possible, thereby using a fraction of the disk space full incremental backups would require (and offering faster backup speed as well, I’d reckon). Dirvish sets forth similar promises as rdesktop.

All this hard linking sounds very similar to the way subversion does branching. In some cases, it might be reasonable to use a subversion-backed filesystem, where every write is a commit/checkin. It should be configurable, so certain files could be excluded. It should allow lazy writes.

Harvey Danger: Free as in Beer

Filed under: Default — adam @ 8:00 am PST

Harvey Danger’s latest CD is available for free download. Why? In a nutshell, they see this as good publicity. I thought it was decent, and sent them a $16 contribution.
